Very sad to hear about Hugo Trepte’s passing on March 15. Will never forget sitting with Charles Barrows, Dan Bond, Cameron Sellers and many other great people during his super enthusiastic geometric proofs and algebra problems at the board. I also loved the North Manitou camping trips when he would roll out his sleeping pad, take some dramamine, and sleep blissfully through roiling 15 ft Lake Michigan waves. I met him when I was seven, noodling around Dow Rotunda or at Math Dept parties. He had the inquisitive kind of mind that keeps asking questions until he reaches understanding. Then he would clap his chalky hands together in delight and/or slap you on the shoulder with a little chalk flying.
